The Longest Journey in an Excavator Record Smashed

A fundraising trek for “The Longest Journey in an Excavator” has secured the company a place in The Guinness Book of World Records, beating the old record by 965.61 kilometres (9 600 miles).

The longest journey in an excavator is 5127.22 km (3,185.9 miles) and was achieved by Neil Smith (USA) on his journey from Tybee Island, Georgia to Ontario, California between 26 March and 20 April 2010.

With JCB veteran Neil Smith at the controls and support from a “Backhoe Across America” crew, the JCB 3CX excavator set off from Tybee Island, GA, on March 26 2010, carrying a bucket of sand from Tybee Island.

After spending 119.5 hours in the cab at speeds averaging 27 mph, Neil Smith drove the backhoe machine onto the beach at the Santa Monica, CA, pier on April 20 and dropped off the Tybee Island sand.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” Neil Smith said. “The JCB backhoe performed brilliantly, and it has been an incredible way to see the country.”

The JCB 3CX backhoe loader hit the road on a 26-day, coast-to-coast fundraising “road trip” to help rebuild Haiti. JCB hopes the “Backhoe Across America” campaign will both remind Americans that Haiti’s long road to recovery is only just beginning, and encourage them to s how their continued support. The JCB backhoe stood up to the ultimate test of endurance, durability and reliability with no unscheduled service checks.

backhoe, also called a rear actor or back actor, is a piece of excavating equipment or digger consisting of a digging bucket on the end of a two-part articulated arm. They are typically mounted on the back of a tractor or front loader.

The record attempt was recognised by Guinness World Records. Guinness World Records, is a reference book published annually, containing a collection of world records, both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record too, as the best-selling copyrighted book series of all time. It is also one of the most frequently stolen books from public libraries in the United States interestingly!
